What Is Bentonite Clay?

In Hindi, bentonite clay is known as Multani Mitti.
Also known as montmorillonite, bentonite clay is clay formed from the ash of volcanoes. The name “Bentonite” comes from the location of the largest source of the clay: Fort Benton, WY. Since the time of Aristotle, clays like bentonite have been used internally (known as “geophagy”) to soothe digestive ailments and topically (known as "pelotherapy") to absorb toxins from the skin.[1] If you have read stories or seen movies that depict sick people being slathered with mud, wrapped in a sheet, and miraculously healed — these experiences may very well be the result of bentonite clay.

 How Does Bentonite Clay Work?

When a remedy like bentonite clay has been used for centuries, you know there’s something to it. Though our ancestors didn’t know how this clay worked, modern research has provided answers. Believe it or not, it’s all about electricity. You see, your body is as much electric in nature as it is chemical. Your nervous system, brain, and circulatory system all operate on electrical impulses. This is what is measured when you have an EKG, for example. Bentonite clay produces an electrical charge when it contacts water. This negative charge attracts positively-charged toxins like toxic metals and chemicals. Like a magnetic sponge, it holds onto impurities and carries them out of the body for elimination.

Health and Beauty Benefits of Bentonite Clay

1. Bentonite clay, a volcanic ash, can be used internally and externally to absorb toxins and remove them from the body. It has a very strong negative electromagnetic charge and when activated with water, it acts like a  magnet pulling metals and toxins in about out of the body.
2. Bentonite Clay is a base of one of my natural skin care products, and it’s especially effective for deep cleansing. When giving a client a facial, I always use my Magnetic Bentonite Clay Detox Face Mask because it is so amazing. You can feel the electromagnetic charge on your face as it dries. The skin is left firmer, brighter, smoother and pores are invisible!
3. Bentonite Clay is a gentle and all-natural laxative. Since it’s not a stimulant, it won’t cause the same adverse reaction as an over-the-counter laxative. It is very gentle and when used correctly it will remove waste from small and large intestines. The large intestines are where most people are unable to remove the waste that can cause a variety of health problems and disease.
4. Bentonite Clay is also effective in removing candida/yeast. I used to suffer with horrible recurring yeast infections and learned that the  S.A.D diet I had, along with the laundry detergent I was using, were the culprits.  It seemed it did not matter what medication I was given; the yeast infection kept coming back. When I learned to eat clean and removed dairy and animal products from my diet I noticed that the yeast infections were reduced.  However, when I starting taking liquid Bentonite Clay it stopped the yeast infections completely. I have not had a yeast infection in over 7 years. And I am HAPPY about that!
5. Bentonite Clay also removes heavy metals from the body. Many people suffer with heavy metal toxicity, without even knowing it. I was surprised to know that I was diagnosed with heavy metal toxicity this year. I was having trouble losing weight and could not figure out why. There are a variety of signs and symptoms including obesity, difficulty losing weight, memory loss, fatigue, muscle aches, fever and weakness. Most Western Medicine doctors do not test for this unless prompted to do so or if a person is extremely ill. I was diagnosed by a Naturopathic MD and she prescribed for me chelation along with detoxing with Bentonite Clay. I chose Bentonite Clay as I was familiar with it. I will tell you this process has been difficult because I have to drink much more of it than usual. However I am still sticking to the protocol and supplementing with liquid Chlorophyll and Cilantro.

How to Use Bentonite Clay.

  • On the Skin: Externally, apply a paste of bentonite clay and water on any skin irritation like blemishes, insect bites, cuts, skin itching, or burns. Leave it on until it dries and wash off. This is said to be especially calming to skin itching from eczema, psoriasis, chickenpox, etc.
  • Armpit Detox: Use a mix of bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar to detox my armpits.
  • Skin Poultice for Bug Bites/Burns/Cuts/Stings: For more severe issues, create a poultice by putting a thick layer of clay on the skin and applying a wet gauze or cloth over it. Wrap the area and leave the poultice on, changing every 2 hours.
  • Face Mask: Many beauty products use bentonite clay for its ability to bind with and remove toxins and impurities. For smooth and healthy skin, make a bentonite clay mask simply by mixing a paste of bentonite and water. Leave on for 20 minutes and wash off with warm water. You may do this 1-2 times a week.
  • Detox Bath: Add about 1/4 cup of bentonite clay to bath water for a relaxing detox bath that softens skin.
  • For Baby Powder: Plain bentonite clay makes a very soothing baby powder for use when there is infection or redness. It can also be made into a clay “mask” to help speed recovery in this area.
